"Typical"

Today in Philly, Obama, in responding to a question regarding his speech on race and his reference to his white grandmother, gave this answer.

610 WIP host Angelo Cataldi asked Obama about his Tuesday morning speech on race at the National Constitution Center in which he referenced his own white grandmother and her prejudice. Obama told Cataldi that "The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity, but that she is a typical white person. If she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know (pause) there's a reaction in her that doesn't go away and it comes out in the wrong way."

Just to put this into prespective, here is Obama's original comment he made in his speech on Tuesday.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

So, let me make sure I have this correct, the actions you describe is "typical" of us white folk? Thanks for clearing that up Senator, so glad we are moving beyond race as you so eloquently stated at the end of your speech. So, Senator, how does a typical black person react to a situation like this...you know, when confronted by a typical white person. Figured you could answer since you seem to know what the typical white person is like.

Geraldine Ferraro also has some issues with Obama's speech. I think she raises a pretty good point and I'd be pretty ticked if I were here. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
