I was right on Obama's pick, so let's see if I can go two for two.
I predict that Senator McCain will pick Mitt Romney as his VP running mate.
Last night it was reported that McCain had decided and he would let his choice know today, and probably leak it to the media sometime tonight.
Now, Romney's name has been at the top of the list for some time, but CNN reported last night that Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and Joe Lieberman were the two names being thrown around the most at present.
Lieberman would certainly make waves, but would anger the Republican base given his pro-choice stance on abortion. I think this would be a mistake and I hope that McCain doesn't go down that road. With all of the talk about the Hillary/Obama feud at the Democrat convention, a Lieberman pick could lead to some of same talk coming from the RNC next week. Something Republicans do not need.
Pawlenty is a young fresh face and the Governor of a potential swing state. Makes sense from an electoral college stand point, but goes against McCain's message of experience.
Romney is a young fresh face. Has private sector expereience. Has executive experience as the former Governor of Massachusetts. Romney also has a good story to tell about how he turned around the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002. He makes conservatives happy and I think would go a long way to uniting the base. However, he and McCain did not see eye to eye during the primary and it was well known that he and McCain weren't the best of buddies.
Ideally, I'd like to see McCain pick a woman. That would certainly make things interesting. Two names to watch on that front that could very well be dark horses: Carly Fiorina, former CEO of HP and Meg Whitman, former CEO of EBay.
Looks as if we'll know by tomorrow.
