Obama made it public, via text, EARLY Saturday morning. Like 2am, early. An odd strategy, but if you were watching the any of the 24 hour news networks on Friday, it didn't matter.
Obama's camp had to be thrilled with the coverage of the Obama's announcement. When I turned on CNN first thing Friday morning the report said, "Obama's announcement could come at any time." As I went to bed on Friday night the report said, "Obama's announcement could come at any time." On top of that, news cameras were stationed at the homes of every potential VP and at Midway Airport in Chicago.
I'll be intetresting to see how the press covers the McCain announcment and if they will dispatch the same cameras to homes and airports.
As I mentioned last Wednesday, Obama's VP choice was going to give us insight as to where Obama felt his campaign stood going into the homestretch of the general election.
With the selection of Senator Biden, Obama knows that his relative inexperience, especially in foreign policy, was hurting him in the polls. Biden is widely recognized in both parties as a foreign policy expert.
There is no question, Biden does give Obama the foreign policy balance that he needs, but Biden is also going to hurt Obama as much as he's going to help him.
Most damaging is going to be Biden's own words about Obama.
During the primaries, Biden said nominating someone without national security credentials would be a "tragic mistake" and said that the presidency "is not something that lends itself to on-the-job-training."
Just four years ago, Joe Biden even suggested to John Kerry that he choose John McCain to be his running mate. Not to mention, Biden even said, "McCain was a good friend, great friend and I would be honored to run with or against John McCain."
Biden is a known plagarist.
Biden was also a strong supporter of the Iraq War. That is a stark contradiction to Obama's view. I'm sure that Biden's view of the Iraq War will change, if it hasn't already.
Finally, it has been well documented that Barack Obama was named the most liberal Senator in the US Senate in 2007. Just for the record, the third most liberal Senator was none other than Joe Biden. How's that for an extremely liberal ticket.
Stand by this week for updates, news and views from what I'm sure will be an entertaining week Democratic Convention in Denver.
Just for the fun of it, here would be a fun drinking game. While watching the Democratic Convention, take a drink everytime you hear "Bush/McCain." Don't drive after the fact though because it's going to be said a lot.
