Some good signs

The Politico is reporting a couple of things that I think are good first steps for the GOP to rediscover itself.

First, Jonathan Martin writes a piece declaring the GOP is in dire straits. He is right, but as I outlined yesterday, I think this is a scenario where it is darkest before the dawn.

One particular quote in the article gave me some hope. Mainly because our leaders seem to understand what the problem is.

Intermingled with the cries of anguish in GOP circles this week — as well as a few choice words aimed at the McCain campaign — there is a common mantra: What do we do now? Interviews with some of the leading figures in the party, many of them representing GOP hopes for a future restoration, answer that question with a consensus that Republicans need not undergo major ideological shifts. Instead, these governors, former governors and members of Congress say the party must re-embrace its small government roots while striving to embrace the reform mantle and become relevant to the day-to-day concerns of average Americans.

If that sounds a little familiar, I suggest you scroll down and read what I wrote yesterday.

Secondly, the Politico is reporting that Minority Whip Roy Blunt has stepped down. I like Congressman Blunt, and know him from my Missouri days, but the current leadership is not getting the job done.

Congressman Blunt has done the honorable thing here and stepped aside, allowing a new face to step in. The new face, will be Eric Cantor.

The good news, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
