Merry Christmas

This time of year became so much more meaningful about 5 years ago when our son celebrated his very first Christmas.

Experiencing Christmas through the eyes of my son is one of the more rewarding experiences of life. It's hope, it's joy and it's laughter. It's expectation, it's excitement and it's exhaustion.

Every Christmas Eve as we attend our midnight service at church, Dyson inevitably falls asleep. Dionne is usually singing so I have the joy of holding Dyson as he sleeps through the carols and the Christmas story.

It is the most peaceful feeling that I experience all year, holding him, hearing the church congregation singing, "Silent Night, holy night, all is calm all is bright."

As the song is sung, I begin to cry with the realization that Christmas began with a birth of a little boy in Bethlehem so many years ago. And as we celebrate that birth of our Lord thousands of years later, Christmas is still about a child. My child, your child, children everywhere.

Christmas morning has become more than presents under a tree, it has become about peace and childlike faith.

The expression of a half-awake child turning the corner to see the presents that Santa has left under the Christmas tree makes stress disappear and makes hope spring eternal.

Smiles of a 5 year old make the troubled economy seem distant, gas prices irrelevant and elections non-existent. I'm sure for most of us, that is a good Christmas Present in and of itself.

So as you celebrate this Christmas season, I encourage you to remember the birth of our Lord and Savior and to experience this Christmas through the eyes of a child.

I'm going to be taking a few days off starting tomorrow and don't know how much I'll be posting so I wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy and blessed New Year.

Character

It is often said, you can judge a man's character by what he does when no one is looking.

Say what you want about President Bush. I voted for him twice, I've agreed with him more often than I've diagreed with him. I'm not thrilled with how he's expanded government over his presdiency nor how he's handled the current financial crisis.

However, I've always respected him as a person.

This story, says a lot about the man, George W. Bush. His approval ratings in the tank, he very easily could have used this as an opportunity to help his popularity. Instead, he chose to do this in private and without the media in tow.

Must be nice

Given the terrible approval ratings of this Congress, it is being reported today by The Hill that Congress is getting a raise.

During this time of economic hardship, bailouts and deficits, this is wrong.

I urge you to contact your Congressman and Senators and urge them reverse this "cost of living" adjustment.

Wamp Polls Strong in East TN...IF

A recent poll of possible GOP candidate for Governor not named Bill Frist was done in EAST Tennessee on December 14 and 15. That poll shows Zach Wamp as the "overwhelming favorite" of GOP voters.

This is an interesting poll. Obviously, if Frist declares his candidancy, all of this is just for fun. If he doesn't run, this poll is significant.

Two candidates from East Tennessee have already signaled their intention to run minus a Bill Frist candidacy. Knoxville mayor Bill Haslam and the aforementioned Zach Wamp.

With East Tennessee being heavily Republican, it will be key to carry East Tennessee in a GOP primary. Haslam has the money, but Wamp, at least as this point, appears to have the advantage.

Congressman Wamp was quick to email the results to his supporters.

"As my family prepares for the opportunities ahead, I have attached the following results from a scientific survey that was conducted across East Tennessee December 14-15 showing an extraordinary approval rating of almost 13 to 1 among Republicans.

I am a very fortunate public servant and thank you so very much."
Congressman Zach Wamp

I've made no bones about the fact that I think Zach Wamp would be a great Governor for the state of Tennessee. I'm glad to see this poll, but until Frist makes his intentions known, polls like this are simply just "ifs and buts."

As the old saying goes, "if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas."

"We're going to have to get tougher"

Michael Calderone posted a blog over at the Politico after President-elect Obama's press conference where he got a little smart with a reporter from the Chicago Tribune.

President-elect Obama is getting a little tired of answering the questions from the press about the Blagojevich scandal.

During today's press conference, President-elect Baracj Obama brushed off a question from Chicago Tribune reporter John McCormick about the Blagojevich scandal, and what interaction any advisers had with the Illinois governor.

"I don't want you to waste your question," Obama said.

McCormick asked another Blago-related question, and Obama said he wouldn't confirm a report in the Tribune from this weekend. Obama also said that the U.S. attorney's office asked his team to withhold an internal review until next week.

After a few attempts, the reporter finally followed up by asking who had the better jump shot: Obama or incoming education secretary Arne Duncan?

The article went on to say that after the press release, NBC Washington bureau chief Mark Whitaker said reporters have not been aggressive enough during Obama's post-election pressers.

"Our job is to hold him to account," Whitaker said, adding that he thinks "we're going to have to get tougher."

I find this so laughable and ironic. For the 19 months that Obama ran for President, the mainstream media didn't hold him to account for one thing. He got the largest free pass in presidential election history.

Now the press is wanting to hold the President-elect's feet to the fire and understandably, he doesn't like it.

This is the equivalent to letting a child get away with anything he/she wants until they turn 13 then the parents decide it's time to start disciplining their child so they won't be out of control. By that time, it's too late.

Same thing here, the press should have held Obama to account long before he was elected president. They have conditioned him to a free pass and that's what he expects.

Obama should expect this, but the mainstream media has nobody to blame but themselves. Obama is the monster they created.

This is what it's all about

My God Bless our men and women in uniform serving during this holiday season and may he also bless the family members here at home.

If this video doesn't tug at your heart strings, I'm not sure anything will.

Clinton's third term

From Drudge...

FLASH: Clinton personal secretary, Betty Currie, now answers phones at Obama headquarters... Developing...

You'll remember Ms. Currie's name from the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Saw all of those bumper stickers during the camapaign that said, "Obama: Carter's second term." In reality, it probably should have said, "Obama: Clinton's third term."

Emanuel on tape?

Michael Sneed at the Chicago Sun Times is reporting that Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is on tape 21 times having conversations about Obama's vacant Senate seat.

IF this is true, it will be interesting to see what the content of those conversations are.

Could be nothing, but Obama's Chief of Staff has been mum on the issue, matter of fact, he hasn't even been seen.

Obama did say yesterday that his internal investigation showed no wrong doing but left it at that. The report is not being release at the request of U.S. Attorney in charge of the Blagojevich investigation, Patrick Fitzgerald.

Had Obama handled this properly from the beginning and been more forthright about the contact his office had with the Governor, I think he could have separated himself from this scandle much earlier.

For someone that promised a more transparent presidency, he sure hasn't delievered on that promise.

Proud Dad

I hope you all won't mind me taking a break from my normal posts and share this video. Last night, my son made his singing debut at our church's Family Christmas Program.

Hope you enjoy, I'm a proud dad this morning.

No Frist for Governor?

I've gotten word this morning that Bill Frist will NOT run for Tennessee Governor in 2010.

Still confirming sources....stand by.

UPDATE:

Sources came from East Tennessee and are well connected politically. I'm not going to divulge names, because I don't have their permission. What I will say is that I think what I was told was, and is, still rumor.

Let's leave it at this, these rumors did NOT come from anyone close to Senator Frist.

Sorry for the post, just passed along word that I had gotten and is why I ask everyone to stand by while I tried to confirm.

Frist, as it appears, is neither in or out at this point.

Auto Bailout Dies in the Senate

It's offical, the auto bailout died in the Senate tonight.

Evidently, the deal feel through when the United Auto Workers (UAW) refused to agree to a wage cut before their contract expired in 2011.

Obviously, Republicans are going to get blame for this, but the outrageous labor costs is part of the reason for the financial trouble. If they want taxpayers to sacrafice, it only seems fair that the UAW should be willing to give a little too.

While this is good news for taxpayers, keep in mind, the bailout of the financial institutions failed in its first bid, only to pass later.

Contact your Senators and encourage them to continue to stand firm against another taxpayer burdened bailout.

Biden warned us

Joe Biden warned us during the campaign that the "mettle of this guy would be tested."

I'm sure that he didn't think it would be because of the crooked dealings of Obama's own governor.

It would be wise of President-Elect Obama to put everything out in the open about what deals he or his office had with Blagojevich. Otherwise, this scandle is going to plague the first year or so of his presidency.

Of course, if his involvement is questionable, I'm sure he wants to keep it under wraps.

Obama has already said that he had no contact with Blagojevich on his Senate seat, BUT, his right hand man David Axelrod has already said otherwise.

Update: Axelrod "misspoke."

Sorry, but that explanation doesn't cut it, and Obama or Axelrod didn't even release the statement. It came from the infamous "Obama aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity."

Obama himself, not Axlerod or a campaign aide, MUST put this issue to rest quickly and leave it between the Feds and Blagojevich.

The mettle of President-elect Obama is being tested, and he isn't even in office yet. Obama promised a transparent presidency, he must deliver on that promise or his presidency will start under a very dark cloud.

Illinois: Where Governors go to prison

Here's a nice quote from today's press conference:

"If Illinois isn't the most corrupt state in the United States, it's one hell of a competitor."

Take note Illinois Chamber of Commerce, that quote will look great on your next brochure or trade show booth.

When Blagojevich goes to jail, and he will, he will be the THIRD Illinios Governor to be in prison.

What a wonderful thing for the state of our next president.

Illinois Governor Arrested

Apparently, Illinios' Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich was trying to sell President-Elect Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder.

Here is an excerpt from the story at Fox.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff John Harris were arrested Tuesday morning in Chicago on two counts each of federal corruption charges stemming from allegations Blagojevich was trying to sell President-elect Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat to the highest bidder.

The arrest is part of a three-year probe of "pay-to-play politics" in the governor's administration. The criminal complaint by the FBI says each man was arrested on two charges of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery.

Another Obama friend/associate in trouble with the law. Why is it that the only Obama friends/associates we hear about are racist, anti-American or crooks?

Here's an interesting question, Blagojevich is still the Governor and technically it is still his job to name Obama's replacement. Surely, the people of Illinois will not allow this crook to name the replacment. Will Blagojevich still name the replacement? It wouldn't suprise me. Given Blagojevich was already under investigation for corruption, he was still 'ballsy' enough to sell this open seat to the higgest bidder, knowing the feds were already investigating him.

Blagojevich should resign IMMEDIATELY!

BUT

His attorney says he has no plans to resign.

If Blagojevich won't resign, then the Illinois legislature must take quick action to remove him from office.

Stay tuned, I'm sure more details will emerge throughout the day.

As promised...here's more.

Blagojevich...Obama's seat, a "valuable thing."
Blagojevich... "I want to make money"

Go here, to read the 78 page complaint filed today against Governor Blagojevich.

Just read on Twitter that there is a report that Obama COS Rahm Emanuel is the whistleblower on Blogojevich. If that is true, it will certainly help from keeping Obama getting dragged into this nasty situation.

Chip Saltsman for RNC Chair

Chip Saltsman is up and running online in his bid to become the next chair of the RNC.

Check out the site and also join his Twitter page.

I urge you to support Chip in his campaign. He's a proven leader and is exactly the type of person the Republican Party needs at this time.

Story in today's Nashville Tennessean regarding Saltsman's official announcement made this morning in Nashville.

Here's some video...

What Might Have Been

ABC got a hold of a McCain ad that hammered Obama on Rev. Wright.

You can see from the clip that the only thing it lacked was approval by the candidate to run it...which it never got.

Honorable? Naive? Would it have even mattered?

What do you think? Should McCain have run the Obama/Wright ad? Would be interested in everyone's comments.

It's still a wonderful life

One of my favorite movies of all times is Frank Capra's classic, "It's a Wonderful Life."

If you've seen it you know what I'm talking about, it you haven't, do yourself a favor and make sure you watch it this Christmas season.

There are two movies I HAVE to watch during the holiday season, Christmas Vacation and It's a Wonderful Life. Talk about two totally opposite ends of the spectrum.

Anyhow, stumbled across this article today and thought it really put things into perspective.

Obama backs off windfall profit tax pledge

President-elect Obama is going back on his pledge to tax the profits of oil companies, much to the dismay of his own party.

"President-elect Obama announced the policy during the campaign because oil prices were above $80 per barrel," a transition aide said. "They are currently below that now and expected to stay below that."

This is good news. This same policy was tried back in the 70s and it drove gas prices through the roof. So with gas prices finally falling, a windfall profit tax would have been bad for the economy and bad for consumers.

Obviously, that tax would have been passed on to consumers.

I've said I would support Obama when he made smart decisions and this is one of those times.

Oddly enough, Obama seems to be getting more criticism from Democrats these days than Republicans.

A little prediction, Obama is going to have more problems with his own party than he is with Republicans.

I'll write a little more on this tomorrow.

Some people never learn

You'd think that Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks would just learn to keep her mouth shut.

She insults President Bush overseas and basically causes the Chicks to fall off the map musically speaking.

Now, she's being sued for defamation by the step-father of one of three 8-year-old boys slain in West Memphis. Maines spoke out for three people convicted of the slayings and alleged the stepfather was instead involved in the killings.

I've got some advice for Ms. Maines...stick to singing!

Wamp is ready...if

Congressman Zach Wamp, speaking in Nashville today, said he is ready to run for Governor of Tennessee if former Senator Bill Frist decides not to run.

Obviously, if Frist runs, he's going to clear the field for the GOP and given his personal wealth and name ID, possibly clear the field for the Democrats too.

I will say this, I think Bill Frist would make a great governor, but I have worked with Congressman Zach Wamp throughout my 7 years in Tennessee, and you will not find a better man than Zach Wamp.

He is energetic, he's articulate, he's intelligent and more importantly, he's a leader. I have not met or worked with someone who inspires me more than Zach Wamp. Tennessee would greatly benefit from having Zach Wamp as Governor and I would be first in line to support his campaign.

I don't want to say I hope that Frist doesn't run, but nothing would make me happier than to put a Zach Wamp for Governor bumper sticker on my car.

Campbell Brown lectures Obama

This is rich. CNN's Campbell Brown gave a little lecture to President-Elect Obama yesterday on her show, "No bias, No bull.

The simple hilarity of a show on CNN called "No bias, No bull" is amusing on it's own, but Ms. Brown took Mr. Obama to task for brushing aside the media.

Obviously, President-Elect Obama isn't reacting favorably to tough questions, he hadn't been asked any for the 19 months he ran for President. (With the exception of his visit to Bill O'Reilly)

Maybe if Ms. Brown and her colleagues at CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC et al had prepared President-Elect Obama by actually posing tough questions to him during the campaign, he wouldn't be so resistant to their questions now.

Here's a little excerpt of what Brown said last night:

Mr. President-Elect, reporters, we hope, are going to ask you a lot of annoying questions over the next four years. Get used to it. That is the job of the media, to hold you accountable. But this isn’t just about the media. It’s about the American people, many of whom voted for you because of what you said during the campaign, and they have a right to know which of those things you meant and which you didn’t. Apparently, as you made clear today, you didn't mean what you said about Hillary Clinton. So, what else didn’t you mean? The media is going to be asking, and you were wrong today. Annoying questions are about more than just the press having fun. Annoying questions are about the press doing its job and the people’s right to know.

NOW, the press wants to do it's job. Good thing, we were beginning to wonder.

Twitter

I recently joined Twitter. Honestly, I have no clue how to use it at this point, I'm still learning.

Learning the ropes, but leave me a comment if you have any pointers. At this point, anything is helpful, maybe it will keep me from looking like a total moron.

You CANNOT be Serious

It's that time of year, no, not for Santa and Christmas Trees, but for debate over college football and the BCS. I think we could all agree that the best was to describe the BCS is to remove the C. For the record, I think Texas was hosed, but we'll debate that another day.

Having said that, it appears that Hawaii Democratic Congressman Neil Abercrombie is urging President-elect Obama to get the Justice Department to investigate the BCS.

"Replacing the Bowl Championship Series with a process that allows the NCAA Division I football National Championship to be decided on the field is a matter of sportsmanship and a matter of equity," Abercrombie said.

Now look, I love college football as much as anybody and I would love nothing more than to have a 8 team playoff. But a Department of Justice investigation? Really?

Let me get this straight, we have crooks at Freddie, Fannie and Wall Street. We have the three big automakers begging for cash to avoid bankruptcy, California is 2 months away from being totally broke and other states are close behind Not to mention we have a war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and THIS is what Congressman Abercrombie is wanting the Justice Department to investigate?

I pray that President-elect Obama is smart enough to thank Congressman Abercrombie for his letter and wish him a nice day.

Investigating the BCS right now would be the equivalent of the band playing while the Titanic sunk. Sure sounds pretty, but there a some more important things at hand.

Senator Reid: We don't have to smell the tourist now

Good old Senator Reid celebrated the opening of the Capitol's new visitor center by insulting the very people that paid for it...the citizens.

"My staff tells me not to say this, but I'm going to say it anyway," said Reid in his remarks. "In the summer because of the heat and high humidity, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol. It may be descriptive but it's true."

No Senator, what you smell is the sweat of hard working Americans spending their money to visit the people's house that you serve at their pleasure. OK, so we don't all get the perks and pleasures of air conditioned vehicles driven by a guy in a suit or underground trams so, God forbid, you don't have to walk to the Senate Chamber.

What you smell is what everyday Americans do to provide for their families so you can waste their money on criminals on Wall Street and at Freddie and Fannie. So you can waste their money bailing out three auto companies who have made bad decisions and run companies completely into the ground.

Sorry Senator, but that smell is not tourists visting OUR Capitol. That smell is the crap coming out of yours and every other politican's mouth claiming to be doing the people's business.

Frist Endorses Saltsman for RNC Chair

Didn't see this until today, but it should come as no surprise, former Majority Leader Bill Frist endorsed Chip Saltsman for RNC Chair.

For what it's worth, I think Chip would do a phenominal job as RNC chair. He's is exactly the type of leader we need.

RNC Platform

Now, the links on the RNC web page have been updated, but it took a post from Jim Geraghty to point out that the RNC still had it's 2004 platform listed on it's website as of yesterday.

And we wonder why Americans questioned what we stood for? Even if they wanted to know and do a little research, they would have known what we stood for in 2004...not 2008.

This is just one more reason the next RNC chair MUST be willing to not only use the Internet and technology, but use it effectively.

It isn't enough anymore to just have a website. It must be used as an effective grassroots tool to not only reach out to voters, but inform them and motivate them.

I posted this a couple of weeks ago, but I urge you to go to Rebuild the Party and endorse their 10 point plan to strengthen and modernize the GOP.
